Who We Are

Urban Insurance Partners Institute Background Information

The Urban Insurance Partners Institute is a nonprofit insurance industry organization dedicated solely to urban affairs. The institute is committed to being the industry's leading resource on urban markets.

UIPI's mission is to help insurers have a rewarding presence in urban areas. Programs are designed to benefit both insurers and urban residents. A diverse group of insurers, reinsurers and insurance industry trade associations provide financial and technical support to these efforts.

As an educational organization, the institute focuses on two main areas. These emphases include educating insurance companies about urban markets, and teaching urban residents about insurance. The institute has demonstrated success in creating alliances among insurance companies and local urban community organizations.

UIPI strives to provide insurers with the resources, contacts and data needed to write business effectively in urban areas. Several initiatives help accomplish these goals. Ongoing programs include a national workshop, Web site, informative newsletter, media outreach, consumer insurance education classes and community partnerships.

The workshop features prominent insurance, business and legal experts, along with state regulators and urban affairs leaders. The latest developments in urban marketing are highlighted. The event helps insurers gain the tools necessary to compete effectively in an urban setting.

The Web site features information on institute activities, supporters and programs. Also included are urban affairs resources, model urban initiatives and community partners. An enhanced UIPI Web connection is for the exclusive use of members, providing additional data. The Web site is currently being expanded.

The newsletter is sent to supporters, numerous insurance companies, insurance regulators, lawmakers, and community organizations. UIPI programs, members' urban affairs activities, urban trends, community partners, and model urban initiatives are identified and promoted.

Print and broadcast media have featured the institute in many articles, and radio and television broadcasts. Media outreach enables the institute to share credible information about what UIPI and the insurance industry are accomplishing in urban areas.

The institute also works with a variety of community organizations and networks to help urban residents better understand insurance. UIPI supporters have taken part in homeowners insurance education presentations, neighborhood revitalization programs and other community partnership activities. Smoke detectors are distributed at many of these projects to help residents protect their families and property, providing a tangible connection to the insurance industry.

Through these endeavors and a hands-on board of directors, the institute is able to react quickly to the needs of the insurance industry and urban insurance consumers.

The Urban Insurance Partners Institute was founded by the insurance industry in late 1996 and has grown steadily since its formation. Insurers are increasingly looking to urban markets to expand their consumer base, with 8 out of 10 U.S. residents now living in metropolitan areas. Supporters see UIPI as an important resource for their companies, providing a vital industry outlook on urban markets.

Companies that support the institute have the opportunity to serve on the UIPI executive board, Advisory Committee and other important ad hoc groups that help set direction of the organization.

UIPI is a 501 (C) 3 tax-exempt entity.

First, I really want to applaud the Urban Insurance Partners Institute because of the valuable and I believe very innovative work that it does…It really is the only place in the industry where this sort of creative thinking on urban issues is taking place.”

Hon. Diane Koken
